Contra Costa Times: Jerry McNerney Has Earned the Right to Another Term
Contra Costa Times editorial © 2014 Bay Area News Group
Jerry McNerney has represented portions of the East Bay and Central Valley in Congress for the past eight years, we believe he deserves another two years.
After districts were realigned following the 2010 Census, McNerney lost many of his East Bay constituents as his district moved more into Central Valley. His district still covers Brentwood, Byron, Oakley and most of Antioch.
We do not always agree with McNerney, but we respect his thought process, intellect and availability. He has come home to the district nearly every weekend. We also believe his tireless work on behalf of veterans is reason alone to re-elect him.
McNerney wrote a bill that was signed into law that established better procedures for the care of returning veterans with traumatic brain injuries. He wrote another in 2013 that allowed vets to keep receiving their benefits during the government shutdown. He was also one of the first members of Congress to call for Secretary Eric Shinseki’s resignation in the wake of the recent scandals at the VA.
McNerney’s opponent, retired U.S. Marshal Tony Amador, says that he would be a “change agent” and that he is independent and would buck his own party’s leadership to accomplish that change. We are sure he is sincere, but many a supposed maverick has learned the bitter truth that in the realpolitik of Washington, doing the latter virtually guarantees one can’t do the former.
We urge voters in the 9th Congressional District to re-elect Jerry McNerney.
