McNerney, D-Stockton, is consistently gaining experience and seniority. He’s seeking his fifth two-year term — coming a long way from his upset of seven-term Republican Richard Pombo in 2006.

His opponent this year, Tony Amador, has run unsuccessfully for a number of seats at various levels of government. He calls McNerney an “ineffective incumbent” and a “lockstep Democratic voter.

In reality, McNerney has been a productive Congressman who has come a long way from his first term, when he faced criticism for favoring other parts of his then-district over Stockton and San Joaquin County.

District 9 now includes most of the county, and McNerney has been a solid leader, pushing for recognition and resources for an area that has been traditionally neglected by Washington.

“It’s important to have a strong voice advocating for the district,” McNerney told The Record’s Editorial Board in August. “My experience is important, and I know how to get things done.”
