Stockton, CA— Rep. Jerry McNerney (CA-9) today declared victory in his bid for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives. The Associated Press called the election in favor of McNerney after updated vote counts showed him with an insurmountable lead over his opponent, Republican Tony Amador. McNerney’s win returns him to Washington for a fifth term representing communities in San Joaquin, Contra Costa, and Sacramento Counties.
McNerney’s win came amid a national wave of Republican victories throughout the country, and despite an expensive, high-tech voter turnout effort funded by the national Republican party.
“I want to say thank you to my community for their continued confidence in me,” said Rep. McNerney in a statement. “I ran an honest, positive campaign based on my record, and I am proud that voters responded to that. I have never taken my office for granted, and I look forward to continuing to work hard in Washington and here at home for my constituents.”
Among his recent accomplishments, McNerney brought home federal money for Stockton Airport, for law enforcement in Contra Costa and San Joaquin Counties, and for the National Guard to establish a youth program outside of Stockton. Rep McNerney successfully lobbied to allow Stockton to apply for federal grant money, and wrote a bill to speed up construction of the VA health facility at French Camp. He also led the effort to oppose the twin tunnels of the Bay Delta Conservation Plan, which contributed to the plan being shelved following an environmental review.
McNerney’s campaign was a grassroots effort that included volunteers, both young and old, from throughout the congressman’s district. Together they visited over 20,000 homes, contacted over 250,000 constituents by phone, and held events throughout our community that showcased the diversity and talents of the communities of the Delta region.
