Message:	In 2006, Jerry McNerney stood up for Democrats and working families and won an unprecedented victory for Congress against seven-term incumbent Richard Pombo. Jerry was inspired to run for the seat in California's 11th Congressional District by his son, Michael, an officer in the US Air Force. After receiving his absentee ballot while serving abroad. Michael realized that Pombo was running for Congress unopposed and urged his father to run, despite difficult odds. Jerry McNerney made congressional campaign history, defeating Pombo 53 to 47 percent and becoming the only California challenger to beat an incumbent and the only challenger in the country to defeat a House committee chairman. Winning a Congressional seat is an incredible undertaking. It certainly takes money and lots of it. But, as Jerry said shortly after his victory, "anyone who thinks it's all about money is sadly mistaken. What it really takes is the heart, passion, commitment and dedication of hundreds of supporters." These ingredients created the people power that overcame a 2-to-1 disadvantage in fundraising, shocking the pundits and power-brokers. As Jerry said, he may have initially "stood up and decided enough was enough, but it was the tidal wave of people -- who decided to make a real difference and step up with time, energy, and love of country -- that created the real change." While Jerry McNerney is now serving all of us in Congress, he will face a challenge in 2008 in a district that carries a 7-point Republican registration advantage.
