From Jerry’s Desk, March 2014
A few weeks ago, I was excited to file my reelection paperwork for California’s Ninth Congressional District. With your help, I will keep fighting for what’s right for you, for our district, and for our country.
I’ve been hard at work on the issues that matter, and I’ll be sending you email updates like this one to keep you informed about what I’m doing for you in Washington and at home.
California is facing its worst drought in decades. It’s more important than ever that we come up with commonsense solutions to conserve water and increase water efficiency. I recently authored two bills that would help small business owners, farmers and consumers like you save water and money. One bill would give folks a tax credit for buying water-efficient appliances for their home or business, while my other bill would make it much easier for local water authorities to work together to achieve greater water efficiency. I’m also fighting against Delta water grabs. I strongly opposed and voted against H.R. 3964, a bill that would have taken water from the Delta and given it to Southern California. I continue to fight the harmful Bay Delta Conservation Plan.
As a strong voice for veterans, I’m holding the Veterans Administration accountable by pushing them to eliminate the backlog of disability claims and requiring them to provide regular updates on what they’re doing to resolve this problem. And earlier this month, I co-sponsored a bill that would give veterans faster and easier access to hard-earned educational funds when they return home and prepare to go back to school.
Housing prices are up, which is a good sign. But it’s still too hard for many working families to afford to buy a home. That’s why I’ve introduced a bill that would make home ownership more accessible by increasing the availability of low-interest loans for qualified applicants.
I’ve enjoyed visiting with many of you at community events these past few months, including my long-running Congress At Your Corner events, where I go to different places around my district to hear directly from residents on the issues they care about. Last week, I joined folks in Contra Costa County to help restore some of our wetlands. And earlier this year, I was part of a team of volunteers that used a new, locally-created mobile app to locate graffiti, broken glass and trash in downtown Stockton and get it cleaned up.
I’m also sponsoring student competitions to help recognize and encourage the talents of our young people. My annual Congressional Art Competition is currently underway for student artists in my district. And I’m excited to be holding a new contest to encourage students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). My Congressional STEM Competition challenges participating students to design a mobile phone app. As a mathematician and engineer, I know how rewarding STEM careers can be and how important jobs in these fields are for our economy and our future.
We’ve already accomplished so much together, but there’s still a lot to be done. I encourage you keep in touch with me, and I’ll be sure to keep you updated on what I’m doing to fight for you.
