I am glad to send you these regular updates so that you know what I’m working on in Washington and at home. Over the past few weeks, I have continued to focus on the issues that matter to you, like honoring our veterans, improving public safety, and protecting our natural resources.

I was one of the first members to speak out on the troubling and unacceptable “secret lists” at some Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals that were preventing our veterans from receiving timely care. I called for VA Secretary Shinseki to step down, and I am continuing to press the VA to fix this problem and restore the confidence of our veterans.

Just a couple of weeks ago, I introduced a bill that will help our returning veterans get jobs in law enforcement. This commonsense program benefits both our veterans and our law enforcement agencies. Many veterans have received military training that makes them well-qualified for careers in civilian law enforcement. And our police departments will benefit from the skills and experience those veterans bring to the job.

And after a recent conversation with one of our local police chiefs, I wrote an amendment that would allow local police departments to get federal funding for essential technology that could save the lives of both civilians and officers. I’m pleased that the House passed my amendment with strong bipartisan support, by a vote of 306-106.

I’m continuing to oppose both the Bay Delta Conservation Plan (BDCP) and legislation here in congress that could have a devastating effect on our water resources, especially the fragile Delta. The House and Senate may consider water legislation this year that includes provisions of the Valadao-Nunes bill, H.R. 3964, which does not provide any solutions to end water shortages, will irreparably damage the Bay-Delta, and will degrade drinking water quality and cost our state thousands of jobs and billions of dollars. We can do better, and I will work with other Delta members of congress to make sure our voices are heard.

I also want to say that I was honored to have so much support from voters in last week’s primary election.Primary Election Watch Party 2014

Thank you to everyone who cast their vote for me by mail and in person. Your energy and enthusiasm are the reason I’m here, and I will keep fighting alongside you over the next few months to get the job done in November. My wife Mary and I also want to give a special thank you to everyone who came out to spend election night with us at Chitiva’s Salsa Restaurant. We hope to see you all again soon.

Best,
